Token: the unit LLMs read and bill by — a word piece, roughly 4 characters of English. "Internationalization" is several tokens; "cat" is one.
Context window: the maximum number of tokens the model can see at once (prompt + conversation + documents + its own answer). Everything must fit in it — this is why memory and RAG exist.
