2xx success: 200 OK, 201 Created, 204 No Content with no response content.
3xx redirection/cache handling: 301 and 308 permanent redirects, 302 and 307 temporary redirects. 307/308 preserve the request method. 304 Not Modified tells a conditional requester to reuse its stored representation.
4xx client errors: 400 Bad Request, 401 missing/invalid authentication credentials, 403 request understood but refused, 404 Not Found, 409 state conflict, 422 syntactically understood content whose instructions cannot be processed, 429 Too Many Requests.
5xx server errors: 500 unexpected failure, 502 gateway received an invalid upstream response, 503 temporarily unavailable, 504 gateway timed out waiting for an upstream response.
A 401 response includes a WWW-Authenticate challenge. A 403 does not prove the caller was authenticated. Validation failures may use 400 or 422 according to the API contract.
